ACCES-VR is implementing a five-year model demonstration project designed to transition people working in subminimum wage employment to competitive integrated employment (SWTCIE.)
SWTCIE is partnering with the local Independent Living Center to provide services to people working in subminimum wage employment as well as to students who may be contemplating subminimum wage employment. NY SWTCIE is serving six counties – Nassau, Suffolk, Erie, Monroe, Cortland, and Wayne County.
Competitive Integrated Employment
At or Above Minimum Wage
Compensated at or above minimum wage and comparable to the customary rate paid by the employer to employees without disabilities performing similar duties and with similar training and experience;
Same Level of Benefits
Receiving the same level of benefits provided to other employees without disabilities in similar positions;
Interact with Co-workers without Disabilities
At a location where the employee interacts with other individuals without disabilities; and
Opportunities for Advancement AS OTHERS
Presented opportunities for advancement similar to other employees without disabilities in similar positions.

Process for achieving competitive integrated employment or self-employment for people with disabilities who face significant barriers to working.
Benefits Advisement
Counsel project participants on how working could impact benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicaid and Medicare.
Self-Advocacy
How to speak up for themselves in the workplace if they feel they are not being treated fairly or if they have concerns in general.
Work Readiness
Learn appropriate workplace behaviors and abilities needed to succeed in the workplace.
Work Experience
Gives people the opportunity to see what a job is like, and find out if it is something they want to pursue.
Job Exploration
Process of learning about different career paths as well as different industries and whether a job is the right fit for a person.
